Seven serums, three moisturizers, and a toner someone with suspiciously perfect skin told you to buy. Yet your face is still filing complaints.
A good skincare routine gives every product a purpose. Here’s how to build yours without turning bedtime into a science project.
First, Know Your Skin
Notice how your skin usually feels: shiny, tight and flaky, oily in some places, or generally comfortable. Sensitivity can overlap with any skin type.
Plot twist: oily skin can still be dehydrated. Oil and water are different, so shine doesn’t mean you should skip hydration.
The 4 Steps That Matter
1. Cleanse Without the Squeak
Remove makeup, sunscreen, and daily buildup with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Your skin should feel comfortable afterward.
That tight, squeaky-clean feeling? It can mean your cleanser is too harsh. Your face is skin, not a dinner plate.
2. Treat With a Purpose
Choose a treatment for a specific concern: dehydration, uneven tone, breakouts, or fine lines. You don’t need a separate serum for every insecurity the internet has introduced you to.
Start with one, follow its directions, and introduce new products gradually. A higher ingredient percentage doesn’t automatically mean better results.
3. Moisturize...Yes, Even If You’re Oily
Moisturizer helps retain water and support your skin barrier. Oily skin may prefer a lightweight formula; dry skin may feel better with a richer cream.
Choose based on comfort and how your skin responds, rather than how luxurious the jar looks.
4. Protect With SPF
Finish your morning routine with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Cloudy weather and cooler temperatures don’t eliminate UV exposure.
Reapply every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating, following the label. Summer may have left the group chat; UV rays haven’t.
What Can You Skip?
Toner, essences, and masks are optional extras. Add them when they serve a clear purpose, not because your routine looks lonely.
